Accommodation marketing · Cairns, QueenslandEveryone lands in Cairns. Give them a reason to stay.
Cairns is the gateway to the reef and the rainforest, so plenty of guests treat it as a stopover. We help local stays turn one night before a reef trip into four nights and a direct booking.
The Cairns market
Who comes to Cairns, and why
Cairns is the main city of Far North Queensland and the jumping-off point for two World Heritage areas: the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics rainforest. Reef boats leave the marina every morning. Kuranda, the village in the rainforest, is reached by the Kuranda Scenic Railway, running since 1891, or the 7.5 km Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. Guests also come for the free Esplanade Lagoon, the Atherton Tablelands, waterfalls and the Northern Beaches from Trinity Beach to Palm Cove.
The guest mix is wide. Cairns Airport has direct flights from the capital cities and international flights from Auckland, Christchurch, Tokyo, Osaka, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bali, Port Moresby and Nadi. Backpackers on the east coast trail stay in hostels near the Esplanade. Families come in Queensland and interstate school holidays. Couples and retirees from the southern states come for warmth in winter, and many international visitors spend a few nights here before heading north or south.
Accommodation is spread between the CBD and Esplanade, suburban holiday homes and granny flats, the Northern Beaches, and B&Bs and cabins up on the Tablelands and around Kuranda. There are big hotels, but many stays are small and owner-run, and many depend on Airbnb, Booking.com and Stayz. Cairns Regional Council is reviewing its short-term accommodation rules after rejecting an unhosted rental in a residential street, so owners should keep an eye on changes.
Who books
Who stays in Cairns
International travellers
Visitors from Japan, New Zealand, the UK, Europe, the US and Asia who fly in for the reef. They want easy airport transfers, clear tour pick-up points and a host who answers quickly.
Backpackers and working holiday makers
Young travellers on the east coast trail. They choose on price, location, social atmosphere and reviews, and often book only a night or two ahead.
Families in school holidays
They want a pool, space and a kitchen, and ask about the Lagoon, Kuranda, Skyrail and which reef trips suit kids. Stinger and crocodile safety questions are common.
Winter escapers and long-stay guests
Southern couples and retirees who come for weeks in the dry season. They book months ahead and value quiet, good Wi-Fi and a weekly or monthly rate.
The year
When guests come to Cairns
Dry season peak
June to October
Warm, dry days, southern winter and school holidays. The Cairns Indigenous Art Fair runs in July. Fill long stays early and don't discount the busiest weeks.
Shoulder months
April, May and November
Fewer crowds and better value. The rain eases in April and May and builds again in November. A good time to target Brisbane and Sydney short breaks.
Wet season
December to March
Hot, humid and wet, with the heaviest rain from January to March and cyclones possible. Stinger season runs roughly November to May. Market waterfalls, the Lagoon and lower rates.
Getting here
Cairns Airport is about 7 km from the CBD, a 10 to 15 minute drive, with direct flights from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and other cities, plus international flights from New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bali, Papua New Guinea and Fiji. Many backpackers arrive by coach or campervan up the Bruce Highway. Port Douglas is about an hour's drive north, and Kuranda is a short drive inland, or a slower, more scenic trip by train or Skyrail.
The hard part
What makes marketing in Cairns hard
Cairns gets a lot of visitors, but many are passing through on their way somewhere else.
- Many guests see Cairns as a stopover and book one night before moving on to Port Douglas, the islands or the Tablelands.
- Big hotels and hostels dominate searches, so small B&Bs and holiday homes struggle to be seen.
- The wet season brings a drop in demand, and weather events like ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper's floods in December 2023 still worry guests.
- Many owners depend on booking sites, which makes it hard to build a direct relationship with guests.
- Short-term rental rules in residential areas are under review, so owners need to stay on top of council approvals.
We can't promise more bookings, but we can make your stay the obvious pick for guests who want more than one night.
What we'd do
What we'd do for your Cairns stay
Here's how we'd approach a B&B, holiday home, guesthouse or small resort in and around Cairns.
A "stay longer" itinerary
A page and a set of Instagram posts showing four days from your door: a reef day, Kuranda by train and Skyrail, the Tablelands waterfalls and a slow day at the Lagoon. It gives guests a reason to book more nights.
Google listing for local searches
A complete Google Business Profile for searches like "B&B near Cairns airport" or "Palm Cove holiday house", with free booking links through your booking engine, current photos and fast replies to reviews.
Airport and tour pick-up details
Clear instructions on airport transfers and where reef and Kuranda tours pick up from your area. International guests trust stays that make the first day easy.
A wet season offer that tells the truth
A green season rate for Queensland and southern couples, with honest information on rain, stingers and cyclone cancellations, plus the things that are at their best in the wet.
Winter long-stay packages
Weekly and monthly rates for southern retirees and remote workers, promoted to past guests by email and on Google Ads in Melbourne and Sydney from late summer.
Direct booking perks
A reason to book with you rather than a booking site, such as a free airport pick-up, late check-out on reef days or a local guidebook, shown clearly on your site.
Useful on its own
What guests search, and what to post.
The first list is the kind of thing guests type when looking for a stay in Cairns. Your website and Google listing should answer them. The second is a start on your next month of Instagram.

Questions
Marketing a stay in Cairns
Something else on your mind? Email us.
How do I get guests to stay more than one night?
Show them what they'd miss. Many stopover guests don't realise how much is within an hour of Cairns. A simple itinerary page, Instagram posts of Kuranda, the reef and the Tablelands, and a small reward for three or more nights, like a free airport transfer, can shift the average stay. Make it easy to book those extra nights directly.
Do I need council approval to run a short-term rental in Cairns?
It depends on your zone and your type of stay. A short-term rental in a residential street may need development approval, and the council recently refused one in Cairns North. It is also reviewing its rules, with a cap on unhosted rentals being discussed. Check with Cairns Regional Council before you market a new property. We help with marketing, not planning advice.
Is it worth marketing to backpackers?
If you run a hostel or budget rooms, yes. Backpackers book late, on their phones, and rely heavily on reviews and social media. Good photos of shared spaces, fast replies, clear prices and an active Instagram matter more than a fancy website. If you run a quiet B&B, focus on couples and families instead.
How does it work with you being in India?
We're in Ahmedabad, 4.5 hours behind Queensland all year, since Queensland has no daylight saving. Our working day overlaps with your afternoon. We work by email, video call and WhatsApp, send a short plan each month and report on what we did. You approve anything that goes out under your name.
Free check-up
A free check-up for your place in Cairns.
Fill this in and send it by email or WhatsApp, with your details already typed in. We'll look at how your place shows up online and tell you plainly what's missing. Free, and usually within a working day.
