The Kangaroo Island market
Who comes to Kangaroo Island, and why
Kangaroo Island sits off the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula, across Backstairs Passage from Cape Jervis. Visitors come for wildlife, coast and space: sea lions, kangaroos, koalas and birdlife, long empty beaches, Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch in Flinders Chase National Park, and local food and drink. The island is big, and Penneshaw, where the ferry lands, is about 40 minutes' drive from Kingscote, the largest town. That distance is why a day trip only scratches the surface.
The 2019–20 bushfires were the largest in the island's recorded history. They burned about 211,000 hectares, nearly half the island, and around 96% of Flinders Chase was severely affected. Two people died, and homes, farms and tourism businesses were lost. Recovery has been steady: Flinders Chase reopened in stages, rebuilt boardwalks now lead to Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, and a new visitor centre opened in 2024. Several parks on the island were not burned at all.
Guests are a mix of South Australians on long weekends and school holidays, interstate visitors flying into Adelaide, and international travellers who put the island on a longer Australian itinerary. Stays range from farm stays, beach houses and self-contained cottages to B&Bs, holiday parks and a few high-end lodges. Many visitors stay several nights to cover the island, which suits small operators. Plenty of owners still rely on Airbnb, Stayz and Booking.com, and on tour operator packages.

The year
When guests come to Kangaroo Island
Summer and school holidays
December to February
The busiest time, with beach weather and holiday crowds. Ferries fill early, and this is also bushfire season, so be clear about your fire plan and cancellation terms.
Autumn and spring
March to May, September to November
Mild weather and good wildlife viewing. Push longer stays, Easter and long weekends, and midweek offers for retired couples and interstate visitors.
Winter
June to August
Quiet, cooler and often windy. Sell fireplaces, storm-watching on the coast, wildlife and a slower pace, with ferry-inclusive tips for planning.
Getting here
Many visitors take the SeaLink ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw, a 45-minute crossing with up to 12 return services a day in peak periods. Cape Jervis is roughly one and a half to two hours' drive from Adelaide through the Fleurieu Peninsula. Tourism Kangaroo Island advises booking the ferry before accommodation in busy periods. QantasLink flies from Adelaide to Kingscote in about 30 minutes. A car is close to essential on the island, as distances between sights are long.
The hard part
What makes marketing a Kangaroo Island stay hard
The island sells itself as an idea, but getting there and around takes planning.
- Guests must book the ferry or a flight too, so travel costs and availability shape whether they book with you.
- Many people still remember the 2019–20 fires and aren't sure what's open, so out-of-date images and information hurt.
- Distances are long, so guests need clear driving times from the ferry and to the main sights.
- Demand is seasonal, with busy summers and school holidays and quiet winter weeks.
- Staff, supplies and insurance can be harder to arrange on an island, which puts pressure on your rates.
You can't shrink the island, but good information makes a longer stay feel simple, and that's what fills beds.

Questions
Marketing a stay in Kangaroo Island
Something else on your mind? Email us.
How do I talk about the 2019–20 fires in my marketing?
Briefly and honestly. Many guests still wonder what's open. Show current photos, explain what Flinders Chase is like now and link to official park information. Don't dwell on the damage, and don't pretend it didn't happen. Clear, recent information reassures people far better than silence.
Should I help guests with the ferry booking?
Point them to it clearly. Tourism Kangaroo Island advises booking the ferry before accommodation in busy periods, so a simple page with ferry and flight options, timings and your drive time from Penneshaw saves guests stress. It also stops bookings falling through when the ferry is full.
How does it work with you being in India?
We're based in Ahmedabad, about 4 hours behind Adelaide, or 5 hours during daylight saving. We overlap for most of your day and work by email, video call and WhatsApp. If your internet is patchy, email works fine. You approve drafts before anything goes live, and we send a short monthly update.
Can I get guests to stay longer than one or two nights?
Yes, and it suits the island. Show guests how much there is to see and how long the drives are, then offer a better rate for three or four nights. A sample itinerary built around your location helps people picture a longer stay.
