Hotel & resort marketing · Auli, UttarakhandAuli has the snow. Guests need honest answers.
Guests want slopes, Nanda Devi views and a warm room, and they worry about roads, the ropeway and Joshimath. We help Auli stays answer those worries clearly and get booked directly.
The Auli market
Who comes to Auli, and why
Auli is a ski and hiking area above Joshimath (officially Jyotirmath) in Chamoli district, at about 2,800 metres. Its open slopes face some of the biggest peaks in the Garhwal Himalaya, including Nanda Devi. Guests come for snow and skiing in winter, and for meadows, Gorson Bugyal and treks like Kuari Pass in summer and autumn. Auli hosted the first South Asian Winter Games in 2011, and the national skiing championship and winter carnival were held here in February 2026.
Most guests are Indian, from Delhi NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai, Gujarat, Kolkata and Bengaluru. Winter brings families and couples who want to see snow, plus ski course students. Summer guests often mix Auli with Badrinath, Hemkund Sahib or the Valley of Flowers, since Joshimath sits on the pilgrim route. Trekkers use Auli and Joshimath as a base for Kuari Pass and other trails.
Stays are split between Auli itself, which has a small number of hotels, cottages and camps near the slopes, and Joshimath below, with larger hotels, guesthouses and homestays. The Joshimath to Auli ropeway, once the easy link, has been shut since January 2023, when land subsidence damaged its towers. Under Uttarakhand's new 2026 registration rules, homestays must be run by permanent residents living on the property, with up to eight rooms.

They come for multi-day beginner and intermediate courses in January and February. They need warm rooms close to the slopes, early meals and gear storage.

The year
When guests come to Auli
Snow and ski season
December to March
Snow usually settles from late December, with January and February best for skiing. Sell ski courses and snow stays early, and keep guests updated on road conditions.
Summer and pilgrim season
April to June
Green meadows, clear views and Badrinath traffic through Joshimath. Market treks, family breaks and one-night pilgrim stops with parking and early breakfast.
Monsoon and autumn
July to November
Monsoon rains can block the highway with landslides. October and November are clear and crisp, good for Kuari Pass treks and mountain views.
Getting here
The nearest airport is Jolly Grant near Dehradun, about 280 km away, and the nearest major railway station is Rishikesh, about 250 km away. The drive up the Badrinath highway through Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Chamoli usually takes a full day. Auli is roughly 13 to 16 km by road above Joshimath. With the ropeway shut, the road is the only way up, and it can close for a while after heavy snow.
The hard part
What makes marketing in Auli hard
Auli has a strong winter draw, but access and safety worries make guests hesitate.
- The Joshimath to Auli ropeway has been closed since January 2023, and many listings online still describe it as if it runs. Guests arrive expecting it.
- The Joshimath subsidence of 2023 left many guests unsure whether the area is safe, and local traders say tourist numbers have fallen since.
- It's a long drive from the nearest airport and railhead, and monsoon landslides on the Badrinath highway cause delays and cancellations.
- Snow is never guaranteed on a given date, and ski guests plan around it.
- Demand is concentrated in a few winter weeks and the pilgrim months, with long quiet spells in between.
We can't reopen the ropeway or control the snow. We can help you answer guests' worries honestly and get booked by the ones who still want to come.

Questions
Marketing a stay in Auli
Something else on your mind? Ask us on WhatsApp.
How should I talk about the closed ropeway in my marketing?
Say it plainly. The Joshimath to Auli ropeway has been shut since January 2023, and guests who find out on arrival feel misled. Explain the road route, the drive time from Joshimath and how you help after snowfall. Remove any old ropeway photos or claims from your listings. Honest access information builds trust and saves bad reviews.
Guests ask whether Joshimath is safe. What should I say?
Stick to facts about your own property and its location, and point guests to official district updates. Don't dismiss the question or make promises you can't back up. Many guests just want to know someone will answer honestly and help if plans change. Clear, calm replies and fair cancellation terms reassure them.
Do I need to register my homestay in Uttarakhand?
Yes. Uttarakhand's Tourism and Travel Business Registration Rules 2026 bring homestays under one framework, for permanent residents who live in the property, with up to eight rooms, a registration certificate to display and a five-year validity. Check with your District Tourism Development Officer, then mention your registration on your website.
How do I fill rooms outside the ski season?
Look at the pilgrim route and the trails. Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib traffic passes through Joshimath from May to November, and trekkers head for Gorson Bugyal and Kuari Pass. Offer one-night pilgrim stops with parking and early breakfast, and trek base packages, and promote them in the months before each season.
