Hotel & resort marketing · Gulmarg, Jammu and KashmirMost visitors ride the Gondola and leave. Keep them overnight.

Gulmarg gets crowds in both snow and summer, but many come up from Srinagar for the day. We help hotels, huts and guesthouses give guests a reason to stay the night, and to book directly.

The Gulmarg market

Who comes to Gulmarg, and why

Gulmarg is a meadow at about 2,650 m in the Pir Panjal range, about 56 km from Srinagar via Tangmarg. The big draw is the Gulmarg Gondola, run by the J&K Cable Car Corporation, which climbs in two phases from the resort to Kongdoori and then up the shoulder of Apharwat peak, close to 4,000 m. Guests also come for the golf course, St Mary's Church from 1902, pony rides across the meadow and, in winter, snow.

There are really two markets. In winter, from about December to March when the snow is good, Gulmarg is India's best-known ski slope. Skiers and snowboarders from India and abroad come for the Gondola's upper slopes, and Gulmarg hosts national events like the snow sports chapter of the Khelo India Winter Games, held here again in 2026. Families come just to play in the snow. In summer, families and couples on Kashmir packages come for green meadows, flowers and a cooler day out.

Stays are fairly limited: a few large hotels, mid-range hotels and guesthouses around the meadow, JKTDC huts, and cheaper rooms down in Tangmarg. That keeps rates high in peak snow weeks. But a big share of summer visitors are day-trippers from Srinagar who ride the Gondola, have lunch and drive back. The ski season also depends on natural snowfall, and a dry winter can empty rooms quickly.

Who books

Who stays in Gulmarg

  • Skiers and snowboarders

They come for a week or more in snow season and plan around snowfall reports. They want ski storage, drying rooms, early breakfasts and a host who knows Gondola timings and conditions.

  • Families who want to see snow

Often from Gujarat, Maharashtra and the south, they come for one or two nights. They want warm rooms, reliable heating and help with sledges, gear hire and Gondola tickets.

  • Summer day-trippers from Srinagar

They ride the Gondola and head back by evening. The right package, a sunset or a quiet morning on the meadow, can turn some of them into overnight guests.

  • Couples on a Kashmir honeymoon

They add one Gulmarg night to a Srinagar and Pahalgam trip. A room with a meadow or mountain view and good photos of it wins them over.

The year

When guests come to Gulmarg

  1. Snow and ski season

    December to March

Peak demand when the snow is good, especially around Christmas, New Year and big events. Rooms book fast, but a late or thin snowfall can cancel plans at short notice.

  2. Summer

    April to June

Meadows turn green, flowers come out and families on Kashmir packages arrive. Many come for the day, so sell the evening and the morning after.

  3. Monsoon and autumn

    July to November

Quieter, with some rain in July and August and cold, clear days by October. Market calm, cheaper stays to couples and Srinagar guests who want a night away.

Getting here

The nearest airport is Srinagar, about 56 km away, and the drive via Tangmarg usually takes around two hours, longer after heavy snow. Guests arriving by rail can take the Vande Bharat train to Srinagar. In winter, the last stretch above Tangmarg can need chains or four-wheel drive, and traffic rules sometimes change after snowfall. Tell guests clearly how to reach you and when to set off.

The hard part

What makes marketing in Gulmarg hard

Gulmarg has a famous name, but turning that into overnight bookings takes work.

  • Many summer visitors are day-trippers from Srinagar who never stay the night.
  • The ski season depends on natural snowfall, so a dry winter can wipe out bookings at short notice.
  • Gondola tickets and timings drive every guest's day, and weather can stop the upper phase, which guests sometimes blame on the hotel.
  • Many rooms are sold through Kashmir package agents who choose the hotel for the guest.
  • Guests often ask about safety, so owners need to answer calmly and point them to current official travel advisories.

We can't make it snow, but we can help the right guests find you, trust you and stay longer.

What we'd do

What we'd do for your Gulmarg property

Here's how we'd approach a hotel, hut or guesthouse in Gulmarg.

  1. A page on Gondola timings and tickets

Clear, current guidance on how Gondola tickets are booked, how the two phases work, how far you are from the base station and what happens on bad weather days.

  2. Overnight packages for day-trippers

A sunset on the meadow, dinner and an early Gondola ride before the crowds. Sold to guests already in Srinagar on Instagram and Google, so the second day feels worth it.

  3. Ski pages written for skiers

Ski storage, drying rooms, gear hire and instructor contacts, plus a snow update you post on Instagram every week in season. Skiers trust hosts who talk their language.

  4. Google listing for snow searches

A complete Google Business Profile for searches like "hotel in gulmarg with heating" or "gulmarg stay near gondola", with winter photos, the correct pin and fresh reviews.

  5. Honest heating and access details

Say plainly what heating, hot water and power backup you have, and how guests get up in snow. Fewer surprises means better reviews.

  6. Flexible terms when snow is late

Clear date-change terms for ski bookings, shared on your site and in emails. They make guests more willing to book early in an uncertain winter.

Questions

Marketing a stay in Gulmarg

Something else on your mind? Ask us on WhatsApp.

How do I get day-trippers to stay overnight?

Give them something the day trip misses. Sell a sunset on the meadow, a warm dinner and an early Gondola ride before the queues. Put that package on your site, your Google listing and Instagram, and reach guests while they're still in Srinagar. Some will extend their Kashmir trip by a night.

What if the snow comes late or not at all?

It happens, so plan for it. Offer clear date-change terms for ski bookings, post honest snow updates, and keep a second product ready, like a quiet winter break with Gondola views and good food. Guests who were treated fairly in a bad snow year often come back in a good one.

Should I market to skiers or to families?

Both, but separately. Skiers want storage, drying rooms, Gondola knowledge and snow reports. Families want warmth, safety and help with sledges and gear. One page each, with the right photos and words, works far better than one general page that tries to serve everyone.

How should I handle guests' safety questions?

Answer calmly and honestly, without politics. Explain how to reach you, what the area around you is like and what help you offer, and ask guests to check current official travel advisories before they travel. A short, factual page on your site and quick WhatsApp replies build trust.
