Hotel & resort marketing · Jaisalmer, RajasthanJaisalmer's season is short. Make every week count.
Most of the year's business in Jaisalmer happens between October and March. We help desert camps, haveli hotels and resorts get booked directly in those months, instead of through agents and price wars.
The Jaisalmer market
Who comes to Jaisalmer, and why
Jaisalmer is the desert trip most Indians picture. Guests come for the golden fort, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and still has people living inside it, the carved havelis like Patwon Ki Haveli, sunset at Gadisar Lake and Bada Bagh, the abandoned village of Kuldhara, and above all a night on the dunes. Many also drive out to the border areas at Tanot and Longewala. Most stay two or three nights.
A night in the desert is the main event. The camps are concentrated around the Sam dunes, about 40 km from the city, with quieter camps near Khuri, a little further out. Guests expect a jeep or camel ride on the dunes, a folk music and dance evening, a buffet dinner and a tent. Because so many camps offer the same package, a lot of guests pick on price, often through a driver, an agent or a booking site.
In the city, the stay mix is haveli hotels and guesthouses in and around the fort, mid-size hotels on the edge of town and a few larger resorts on the Sam road. Guests are a mix of domestic families and couples from Gujarat, Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, and foreign travellers on a Rajasthan loop. The Desert Festival, held around the full moon of Magh in late January or February, is the busiest few days of the year.
Who books
Who stays in Jaisalmer
Domestic families on a winter holiday
They come in the Diwali, Christmas and New Year holidays, often combining Jaisalmer with Jodhpur. They want a clean, safe camp with good food, and a clear list of what's included.
Couples and honeymooners
They want the luxury tent, the private dinner on the dunes and the stargazing. Real photos of your tents at night and an honest note on noise help them choose.
Foreign travellers
They come for the fort, the havelis and a quieter desert night, often at Khuri or on an overnight camel trek. They read reviews closely and value direct contact.
Groups and festival visitors
Friends' groups, school and college trips and Desert Festival crowds. They book in bulk, compare prices hard and need quick answers on WhatsApp.
The year
When guests come to Jaisalmer
Peak season
October to March
Cool days, cold desert nights, winter holidays and the Desert Festival. Sell early, push direct booking and don't get dragged into last-minute price wars.
Summer
April to June
Extreme heat, and most desert camps shut down. City hotels should focus on the few who still travel: short fort visits, road-trippers and anyone needing a pool and air conditioning.
Monsoon
July to September
Still hot, with a little rain that turns the desert briefly green. Demand is low, so this is the time to fix your website, reshoot photos and open early-bird winter bookings.
Getting here
Jaisalmer Airport is about 17 km from the city, but commercial flights mostly run in the winter season, roughly October to March, from cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Outside those months, most guests come through Jodhpur. Jaisalmer railway station has trains from Jodhpur, Jaipur and Delhi. By road, Jodhpur is about 285 km, around five hours. The Sam dunes are about 40 km from the city, so camps should spell out pickup times and transfer costs clearly.
The hard part
What makes marketing in Jaisalmer hard
Jaisalmer gets plenty of visitors, but the business model is tough on small owners.
- The season is short. Most revenue comes in about six months, and a bad December can sink the year.
- Desert camps look almost identical online: tents, a stage, a bonfire, camels. That pushes guests to choose on price alone.
- Drivers, agents and touts steer guests to whoever pays the highest commission, so you lose control of both price and guest.
- Flights are seasonal, so guests often plan around Jodhpur, and some cut Jaisalmer short.
- Reviews can swing on things you only partly control, like noisy neighbouring camps or crowded dunes at sunset.
We can't make the season longer, but we can help more of it come to you directly, at a fair price.

Questions
Marketing a stay in Jaisalmer
Something else on your mind? Ask us on WhatsApp.
How do I stop competing only on price with other desert camps?
Find what is truly different about your camp: a quieter spot, fewer tents, better food, a real host, a private dune. Show it in photos and write it plainly on your site and Google listing. Then ask guests to mention it in reviews. Guests pay a bit more when they can see why.
What can I do about agents and drivers taking big commissions?
You won't cut them out completely. But you can reach more guests before they arrive: a good website, a strong Google listing, fast WhatsApp replies and a small perk for booking direct. Guests who have already booked with you are much less likely to be diverted on the way.
When should I start marketing for the winter season?
Earlier than most camps do. Families plan Diwali, Christmas and New Year trips from July and August. Put your winter prices and packages online by then, send an early-bird offer to past guests and run a small Google Ads campaign for your peak dates. By November, the good dates are often gone.
Is it worth marketing a city hotel in summer?
A little. Summer demand is low because of the heat, so don't burn money on ads. Keep your Google listing active, highlight air conditioning and a pool if you have one, and sell to the few who still travel. Use the quiet months to update photos, fix your site and plan winter packages.
