Who comes to Kaziranga, and why
Kaziranga is the place to see the Indian one-horned rhinoceros. Assam Tourism says the park holds about two-thirds of the world's population of the species, along with wild buffalo, swamp deer, elephants and a high density of tigers. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985 and a tiger reserve since 2007. Guests come for jeep safaris across the grasslands, early morning elephant rides, birding around the wetlands and a look at tea country on the way.
The guest mix is wide. Families and couples come from Guwahati, Kolkata and the big metros, usually on a Northeast loop that also takes in Shillong, Majuli or Arunachal. Wildlife photographers and birders stay longer and return. Foreign travellers come through tour operators, often as part of a longer Assam trip. Assam Tourism suggests two to three days to cover the main ranges, but many guests plan only one night, and that is the gap to work on.
Most stays sit along the highway on the park's southern edge, around Kohora for the Central Range and Bagori for the Western Range, with a few near Agaratoli in the east. There are upmarket jungle lodges, mid-range resorts with cottages and gardens, budget hotels and a growing number of homestays in nearby villages and tea estates. Many sell safaris along with the room, and many look alike in photos, so guests often end up choosing on price or on an agent's say-so.

Couples and families flying into Guwahati for a week or so. Kaziranga is one stop among several, and they want a stay that makes the safari easy to fit in.
Wildlife photographers and birders
They book several safaris across ranges and come back season after season. They care about early breakfasts, packed meals and a host who knows the park.
Foreign travellers on a tour
They usually come through an operator on a longer Assam or Northeast trip. They read reviews closely and expect good guides, clean rooms and reliable transfers.
Guwahati and Upper Assam weekenders
Families from within Assam who drive in for a short break in the season. They book late, compare prices and want a pool, good food and a safari slot.

Peak season
November to April
All ranges are usually open and elephant safaris run from 1 November. The weather is dry and pleasant, and Assam Tourism rates late February to early April as the best time for sightseeing.
Opening months
Late September to October
The park reopens in stages as roads dry out. In 2025 the Bagori (Western) Range opened first, in late September, with Kohora following in October. Tell guests exactly what is open, and target Puja holiday travellers.
Monsoon
May to September
The ranges close to tourists, and floods cover much of the park. Market tea garden walks, village stays, birding outside the park and quiet, cheaper breaks to Assam guests.
Getting here
Jorhat is the nearest airport, about 95 km away, roughly two to three hours by road. Guwahati, with far more flights, is about 217 km away, around five hours on the highway that runs along the park's southern edge. Jakhalabandha is the nearest railhead, about 50 km away, and many guests also come by train to Guwahati, Jorhat or Furkating. Buses from Guwahati stop along the highway near Kohora, so clear pickup points help.
The hard part
What makes marketing in Kaziranga hard
Kaziranga has a famous animal and steady demand, but the season and the safari system shape everything.
- The ranges close to tourists for the monsoon, roughly May to September, and many guests assume there is nothing to do at all.
- Reopening happens in stages depending on roads and floods, so dates and open routes change from year to year.
- Many guests plan only one night on the way to somewhere else, so average stays are short.
- Tour operators and agents bundle safaris with rooms, and a lot of guests never contact the stay directly.
- Most resorts along the highway look similar online: cottages, lawns and a rhino photo. That pushes guests to choose on price.

Is it worth marketing during the monsoon closure?
Yes, if you're honest. The ranges close to tourists roughly from May to September, so don't sell safaris. Sell what's true instead: green tea country, village walks, birding outside the park, good food and lower rates. Aim this at families from Guwahati and Upper Assam who want a short break, and keep your regular guests warm for the reopening.
How do I get guests to stay more than one night?
Give them a plan. Most guests don't know that the ranges feel different, or that the elephant safari and jeep safari happen at different times. A simple two-night itinerary on your site, with a range each day and something to do in between, makes a longer stay feel obvious instead of optional.
Should I list on OTAs or focus on direct bookings?
Both, but don't let OTAs and agents own your guests. Keep OTA listings for visibility, and make your own website, Google listing and WhatsApp the easiest place to book, with a small perk for booking direct. Guests who ask you about safaris and get a fast, helpful answer often book with you straight away.
How do I handle the changing reopening dates each year?
Don't publish fixed dates you can't stand behind. Say the park usually reopens in stages from late September and October, with elephant safaris from November, and post updates as the forest department announces them. Guests trust the stay that keeps them informed, and that trust turns into bookings for the peak months.
