Hotel & resort marketing · North Sikkim, SikkimGuests come for Yumthang. Be the stay they remember.

Most North Sikkim trips are sold as packages from Gangtok. We help homestays and small hotels in Lachung and Lachen get chosen by guests and agents, and get asked for by name.

The North Sikkim market

Who comes to North Sikkim, and why

North Sikkim, now Mangan district, is the high country above Gangtok. Guests stay in Lachung, at about 2,700 m, to visit Yumthang Valley and its Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, and drive on to Zero Point when the snow allows. On the other side, they stay in Lachen to reach Gurudongmar Lake, at about 5,430 m one of the highest lakes in India and sacred to Buddhists. Snow, flowers, frozen lakes and high passes are the draw.

Almost every guest comes on a package. Trips are sold by registered travel agents in Gangtok, who arrange the permit, the vehicle and the stay, usually for one or two nights. Guests are mostly domestic: families and couples from Kolkata and West Bengal, and travellers from Delhi, Mumbai, Gujarat and across India on a Sikkim circuit. Foreign nationals face extra permit rules, and not every area is open to them.

Stays are homestays run by local families and small hotels in Lachung and Lachen. The October 2023 flash flood on the Teesta, triggered by South Lhonak Lake, destroyed roads and bridges, and landslides in 2025 closed the area again for months. Lachung and Yumthang reopened in September 2025. Permits for Lachen and Gurudongmar only resumed in September 2026, after repairs at Taram Chu. Road status is now part of every sale.

Who books

Who stays in North Sikkim

  • Package guests from Gangtok

Most guests arrive in an agent's vehicle for one or two nights. They want a warm room, hot water, a hot dinner on arrival and an early breakfast before Yumthang or Gurudongmar.

  • Kolkata and Bengal families

They travel in the Puja and summer holidays and often return to Sikkim. They care about warmth, clean bathrooms and food that suits children and older parents.

  • Snow and flower seekers

Couples and friends time their trip for snow at Zero Point or rhododendrons at Yumthang. Current photos and honest updates on conditions win their trust.

  • Travel agents themselves

Gangtok agents choose which stays go into their packages. Reliable service, fair rates and good reviews decide whether they keep sending guests to you.

The year

When guests come to North Sikkim

  1. Spring flowers

    March to May

Yumthang's flowering season runs from late February to mid-June, with rhododendrons at their best in spring. Summer holidays bring big crowds from the plains.

  2. Autumn and winter

    October to February

Clear skies in autumn, then snow and bitter cold. Zero Point and Gurudongmar can close for snow, and Gurudongmar stays frozen through winter. Sell snow, warmth and hearty food.

  3. Monsoon

    June to September

Heavy rain and landslides. Roads and permits can be suspended at short notice, as happened in 2025. Keep guests informed and make cancellation terms clear.

Getting here

Every trip starts in Gangtok, which guests reach from Bagdogra airport or New Jalpaiguri station near Siliguri. Lachung is about 125 km from Gangtok, usually around eight hours on mountain roads, and can take longer where the road is damaged. Tourist vehicles and permits are arranged through registered agents in Gangtok. Vehicles must cross the Tung checkpost by 4 pm, and night travel is not allowed.

The hard part

What makes marketing in North Sikkim hard

The scenery sells itself, but guests reach you only through permits, agents and roads that change week to week.

  • Permits and vehicles go through registered agents, so guests rarely choose or contact the stay themselves.
  • Roads damaged by the 2023 Teesta flood and later landslides can close without warning, and permits can be suspended.
  • Guests stay only one or two nights and see Lachung or Lachen as a stop, not a destination.
  • Weak mobile signal makes quick replies and online payments hard.
  • Altitude, cold and long drives lead to tired guests and tough reviews, even when the stay did nothing wrong.

We can't open roads or issue permits, but we can help guests and agents pick you, and help you look after them well enough that they say so.

What we'd do

What we'd do for your North Sikkim homestay or hotel

Here's how we'd approach a homestay or small hotel in Lachung or Lachen.

  1. A Google listing guests ask for

A complete Google Business Profile for searches like "homestay in lachung", with an accurate pin, real photos of warm rooms and replies to every review.

  2. A page for agents

A simple page with room counts, rates, meals and photos that Gangtok agents can share with their guests, plus a WhatsApp contact that gets answered.

  3. Honest road and permit notes

A short page on how permits work, what's open and where to check official updates. Keep it current. Guests trust the stay that is straight with them.

  4. Warmth and food as the selling point

Photos and videos of heaters, hot water, blankets and your family's cooking. After a long, cold drive, that's what guests remember and review.

  5. Ask package guests for reviews

A friendly card or WhatsApp message asking guests to review you by name, so they and their friends can ask their agent for your stay next time.

  6. Season-timed Instagram

Rhododendron posts in spring, snow in winter and autumn colour in October, timed for Kolkata and Delhi guests who plan months ahead.

Questions

Marketing a stay in North Sikkim

Something else on your mind? Ask us on WhatsApp.

Almost all my guests come through agents. What can marketing do for me?

Two things. It helps agents choose you, because a strong Google listing, real photos and good reviews make your stay easier to sell. And it helps guests ask for you by name. When package guests can see your stay online and read good reviews, more of them tell their agent which homestay they want.

How should I talk about road closures and the flood damage?

Plainly and without drama. Say that conditions change, that permits and roads are controlled by the district administration, and point guests to official updates. Post when roads reopen. Don't promise access you can't guarantee. Honesty builds trust, and guests remember hosts who kept them informed.

Is it worth having a website if guests can't book directly?

Yes, a simple one. Agents and guests both look you up before they commit. A short site with room photos, meals, heating details and a WhatsApp number shows you're reliable. It also helps guests who pick their own stay before booking a package choose you.

Guests arrive tired and sick from the altitude. How do I protect my reviews?

Prepare them early. Share tips on altitude, warm clothing and the long drive before they arrive. On arrival, offer hot water, a warm room and a simple hot meal. Ask for reviews the next morning, not on arrival, and reply politely to every one.
