The Bright market

Who comes to Bright, and why

Bright sits in the Ovens Valley in Victoria's north-east, about three and a half hours' drive from Melbourne, on the Great Alpine Road. It's the town people base themselves in for the Alpine valleys: planted avenues of European trees, the Ovens River, local wineries and breweries, Wandiligong just up the road and Mount Buffalo National Park about 35 km away. Porepunkah, Harrietville, Myrtleford and Mount Beauty share the same visitors.

Autumn is the signature season. The Bright Autumn Festival has run since 1962 and is run by volunteers over about ten days in late April and early May, with open gardens, a gala day and parade, and the Wandiligong Nut Festival around the same time. In winter the town fills with snow visitors: Falls Creek is about 75 minutes away, Mount Hotham about 90, and Mount Buffalo has snow play at Dingo Dell and Cresta Valley. Summer brings families to the river and cyclists to the trails.

Cycling runs all year. The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail links Bright with Myrtleford, Wangaratta, Beechworth and Rutherglen over 137 km of sealed off-road trail, and road riders climb Mount Buffalo and the Great Alpine Road to Hotham. Many guests are Victorians from Melbourne and regional towns, with interstate visitors adding to the snow and autumn peaks. Stays are cabins, B&Bs, holiday homes, motels and holiday parks, and many owners depend on Airbnb, Stayz and Booking.com.

Who books

Who stays in Bright

  • Melbourne couples and families

The main market. Long weekends, school holidays and autumn breaks. They want a cosy place with a fireplace, somewhere to park bikes and a walk into town.

  • Cyclists

Rail trail riders on easy multi-day trips, and road and mountain bikers training on the alpine climbs. They value bike storage, a hose, early breakfasts and a drying room.

  • Snow season visitors

Families and groups who stay in Bright and drive up to Falls Creek, Hotham or Mount Buffalo, because it's often cheaper and more relaxed than staying on the mountain.

  • Food, wine and autumn visitors

Older couples and groups who come for the colours, the festival, open gardens and the valley's wineries, breweries and produce. Many book a year ahead for autumn.

The year

When guests come to Bright

  1. Autumn peak

    March to May

The busiest and most photographed time, with the Bright Autumn Festival in late April and early May. Rooms sell out early, so push minimum stays and early bookings.

  2. Winter snow season

    June to September

Snow visitors fill weekends and school holidays. Sell drive times to the mountains, ski storage, fires and warm drying rooms, and remind guests about snow chains.

  3. Spring and summer

    October to February

Cycling, river swims and walks. Summer holidays are busy, but this is also bushfire season. Promote midweek rides and be clear about fire closures.

Getting here

Nearly everyone drives. Bright is about three and a half hours from Melbourne via the Hume Freeway and the Great Alpine Road, and around seven hours from Sydney. Albury Airport, about 90 minutes away, has daily Qantas and Rex flights. V/Line runs coaches from Wangaratta station, which has trains to Melbourne. The Great Alpine Road climbs to Mount Hotham, and snow chains must be carried on alpine roads during the declared snow season.

The hard part

What makes marketing a stay in Bright hard

Bright has strong seasons, but the gaps between them are real and competition is close.

  • Autumn and snow weekends fill fast, while midweek nights in late spring and early winter can be very quiet.
  • Snow seasons vary from year to year, so winter bookings rise and fall with the snow cover.
  • Bushfire season runs through summer and can close roads and parks at short notice.
  • Many listings on the same booking sites look alike, so guests compare on price unless you stand out.
  • Victoria's Short Stay Levy adds 7.5% to stays of under 28 days in holiday homes and similar properties, which affects your pricing.

The seasons won't flatten out, but a clear website and a steady Google presence help you catch guests between the peaks.

What we'd do

What we'd do for a property in Bright

Win the peak bookings direct, then give guests reasons to come in the quieter weeks.

  1. A Google listing for "cabins in Bright"

Full photos, room types, bike storage and drive times to Mount Buffalo, Falls Creek and Hotham. Add free booking links through your booking engine.

  2. An autumn festival page

A page on your site with this year's Bright Autumn Festival dates, gala day details and your walk into town, updated each year so it ranks early.

  3. A cyclist-friendly offer

Secure bike storage, a wash-down area and a midweek rail trail package, promoted in spring and summer to Melbourne riders.

  4. A snow season guide

How far you are from each mountain, chain rules, where to hire gear and what happens if snow is thin. It answers the questions guests message you about.

  5. Direct booking pricing that accounts for the levy

If the Short Stay Levy applies to you, we'd set up your direct pricing so the levy is shown clearly and you're not caught out.

  6. Reviews and a past-guest email list

A review request after each stay and a reply to every review, plus a short email before autumn and winter to past guests who opted in, under the Spam Act rules.

Useful on its own

Questions

Marketing a stay in Bright

Something else on your mind? Email us.

How early should I market for autumn in Bright?

Earlier than you'd think. Autumn and festival weekends book out well ahead, so have your dates, prices and minimum stays live by summer. Put the festival dates on your website and Google listing as soon as they're announced, and email past guests who opted in. Then use the spare effort to fill the weeks just before and after the festival.

Is it worth targeting snow visitors if I'm down in the valley?

Yes. Many snow visitors stay in Bright because it's close to Falls Creek, Hotham and Mount Buffalo and often cheaper than the mountain. Tell them exactly how long the drive is, where to hire chains and gear, and what else there is to do on days the snow is thin.

How does it work with you being in India?

We're based in Ahmedabad, about 4.5 hours behind Victoria, or 5.5 hours during daylight saving. We overlap for most of your working day and work by email, video call and WhatsApp. You approve drafts before anything goes live, and we send a short monthly note on what we did and what's next.

Does the Short Stay Levy apply to my B&B?

It depends on your set-up. The State Revenue Office says the 7.5% levy covers stays of under 28 days in whole houses, apartments and some private rooms, but excludes your principal residence and commercial accommodation like hotels. Platforms pay it on their bookings; you pay it on direct ones. Check with the SRO or your accountant.
