The Cradle Mountain market

Who comes to Cradle Mountain, and why

Cradle Mountain sits at the northern end of Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Many visitors come to walk the 6 km Dove Lake circuit under the mountain, spot wombats and pademelons, and see the landscape change through the seasons. In autumn the deciduous fagus turns gold on the slopes above Dove Lake, and in winter snow falls often enough that July and August are the best bet to see it.

Many guests are interstate visitors on a lap of Tasmania, arriving by air into Launceston or Devonport, or with a car on the Spirit of Tasmania. Cradle Mountain is often a one- or two-night stop between Launceston and the west coast. The Overland Track brings a different guest: walkers who need a bed before they start and a hot shower when they finish. In the October to May booking season, the track must be walked from Cradle Mountain south to Lake St Clair.

Accommodation near the park entrance and in Cradle Valley is mostly cabins, lodges and a holiday park, with more cottages, farm stays and B&Bs spread through the Kentish area and towns like Sheffield and Moina. Visitors need a Parks Pass. Private cars can't drive to Dove Lake during shuttle hours, so guests park at the visitor centre and ride the shuttle bus, which carries its own fee unless it's included in their pass or track booking.

Who stays in Cradle Mountain

  • Interstate couples on a Tasmania lap

Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane couples spending a night or two before heading on. They want a fire, a view and a short drive to the shuttle.

  • Overland Track walkers

Hikers who need a bed the night before they start and a way to store a car or bags. They book months ahead once their track date is set.

  • Families and wildlife watchers

Parents keen for kids to see wombats, pademelons and Tasmanian devils. They need family rooms, easy walks and clear advice on the weather.

The year

When guests come to Cradle Mountain

  1. Summer and the walking season

    December to March

The busiest time, with long days, the Overland Track in full swing and the shuttle running into the evening. Push direct bookings and minimum stays.

  2. Autumn fagus and spring

April to May and October to November

Fagus colour in autumn draws photographers, and spring brings walkers back as the track season opens on 1 October. Good weekends, softer midweek.

  3. Winter snow

    June to September

Quieter and cold, with shorter shuttle hours, but snow is a real draw. Market fireside nights and snow walks, and be clear about road and weather conditions.

Getting here

Cradle Mountain is about 1 hour 45 minutes (140 km) from Launceston and about 4 hours (319 km) from Hobart. Devonport, where the Spirit of Tasmania docks, is closer, a little over an hour away. Guests park at the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre and take the shuttle bus to Dove Lake, about 20 minutes one way. Campervans and caravans aren't allowed on Dove Lake Road at any time.

The hard part

What makes marketing a stay near Cradle Mountain hard

The mountain sells itself, but guests have questions, the weather is unpredictable and many only stay one night.

  • Many visitors treat Cradle Mountain as a single night on a bigger trip.
  • Mountain weather changes fast, and snow or fog can spoil a planned day and lead to cancellations.
  • Guests are often confused by park passes, shuttle tickets and what's included.
  • A small number of cabins and lodges compete for the same searches, often through booking sites.
  • Staff and cleaners can be hard to find in a remote area, which limits how much you can take on.

We can't change the weather, but we can make your place the easy, well-explained choice for guests who are already coming.

Questions

Marketing a stay in Cradle Mountain

Something else on your mind? Email us.

How do I explain park passes and the shuttle to guests?

Keep it simple. Guests need a Parks Pass to enter, and during shuttle hours they park at the visitor centre and ride the bus to Dove Lake. The shuttle has its own fee unless it's included in their pass type or Overland Track booking. Put this on one page on your website and link to Parks and Wildlife Service Tasmania for current prices.

How do I get guests to stay two nights instead of one?

Show what one night misses. Weather can close the mountain for a morning, so two nights gives guests a second chance at a clear day. Add a two-night rate, suggest a Dove Lake walk and a wildlife evening, and mention it in your booking confirmation.

Is winter worth marketing at Cradle Mountain?

Yes, carefully. Snow is a real draw, but guests need honest information about cold, shorter shuttle hours and road conditions. A clear winter offer with flexible dates works well for Tasmanians and for interstate couples who can move quickly when snow is forecast.

Can you manage my marketing from India?

Yes. We're based in Ahmedabad, about 4.5 to 5.5 hours behind Tasmania depending on daylight saving. We work by email, video call and WhatsApp, reply during your business hours and send a simple monthly report. We won't pretend to know Cradle Mountain like a local, so we work from your photos and knowledge.
