Who comes to the Gold Coast Hinterland, and why
The hinterland is the chain of ranges and valleys behind the Gold Coast: Tamborine Mountain, Springbrook, the Green Mountains and Binna Burra sections of Lamington National Park, the Numinbah and Currumbin valleys, and the wider Scenic Rim. Much of the rainforest is part of the World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests of Australia. People come for waterfalls, cool air, walking tracks, wineries and distilleries, and a quiet night somewhere green after the noise of the coast.
Many guests live close. Tamborine Mountain is about 72 km from Brisbane's CBD and about 37 km from Southport on the Gold Coast, so it's an easy Friday-night drive. That makes this a weekend and short-break market, with couples, anniversaries and small groups of friends booking one or two nights. Families come in school holidays, and interstate and international visitors staying on the coast add day trips and the odd night up the hill. Weddings are a big part of the Scenic Rim calendar.
Stays are mostly small: cabins with spas and fireplaces, B&Bs, cottages, glamping sites, farm stays in the Scenic Rim valleys and a handful of lodges near the national parks. Weather shapes the business. The 2019 bushfires burnt through parts of Lamington, and Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred in March 2025 brought down trees, closed walking tracks and left Lamington National Park Road under repair for months. Guests check park alerts and road conditions before they book, and many ask about cancellations.

Wedding and celebration guests
Friends and family booking around a Scenic Rim or Tamborine wedding, often in groups and often with a late arrival. They need clear maps and parking notes.
Coast holidaymakers heading inland

May to August
The hinterland's strongest season for cabins: crisp nights, fireplaces and clear walking days. Sell spas, fires and long lunches, and set minimum stays on long weekends.
Spring and autumn
March to April, September to November
Good walking weather and steady weekends, plus Easter and the spring school holidays. Wedding season is busy. A good time for midweek walking packages.
Summer wet
December to February
Hot, humid and the wettest part of the year, with storms that can close roads and tracks. Waterfalls look their best. Be clear about weather, and sell pools, creeks and rainforest in the rain.
Getting here
Nearly everyone drives. Tamborine Mountain is roughly an hour from Brisbane and less from the Gold Coast, and Springbrook is reached on sealed roads from Nerang or Mudgeeraba. Lamington's Green Mountains and Binna Burra sections are further in, via winding mountain roads from Canungra and Nerang that aren't suited to big vehicles. Gold Coast Airport and Brisbane Airport are the nearest for interstate and overseas guests. Clear directions and road notes on your website save a lot of phone calls.
The hard part
What makes marketing a stay in the hinterland hard
Being close to two big cities is the hinterland's strength, and also why demand bunches on weekends.
- Friday and Saturday nights sell; Sunday to Thursday often doesn't, because guests can easily drive home.
- Many cabins look alike in listings: spa, fire, rainforest view. Guests pick on price and reviews.
- Storms, cyclone remnants and bushfire seasons can close roads and tracks, and guests cancel when they see the news.
- Many owners depend on Airbnb, Stayz and Booking.com, so repeat guests often rebook through the platform.
- Short-stay rules sit with your council, either the Scenic Rim or the City of Gold Coast, and differ by zone.
The weekend demand is already there; our job is to make you the obvious pick on Saturday and give people a reason to stay on to Monday.

Do I need council approval to run a cabin or short stay here?
It depends on your council and zone. Tamborine Mountain and the Scenic Rim valleys fall under Scenic Rim Regional Council, while Springbrook and Currumbin Valley are in the City of Gold Coast. Each has its own planning rules for tourist accommodation. We don't give legal advice, so check with your council first, and we'll make sure your website reflects what you're approved for.
How do I handle guests worried about storms, fires or road closures?
Be upfront. Add a page with your cancellation terms, links to Queensland Parks alerts and road updates, and what you do when access is cut. Post calm, factual updates on your Google listing and Instagram when conditions change. Guests book with more confidence when they can see you're organised.
How can I get more midweek bookings?
Give people a reason to take a day off. A midweek offer with a late checkout, a picnic hamper or a second night discount works well for couples, retirees and remote workers. Put it on your website and Google listing, email past guests and run small ads to Brisbane in the cooler months.
