Hotel & resort marketing · Ajanta & Ellora, MaharashtraTwo cave sites, two closing days. Plan their trip for them.

Ajanta and Ellora take at least two days to see well. We help hotels, resorts and homestays around Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar become the stay that makes those two days easy.

The Ajanta & Ellora market

Who comes to Ajanta and Ellora, and why

Ajanta and Ellora are two of India's best-known cave sites, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1983. Ajanta has about 30 Buddhist caves with famous paintings, cut into a horseshoe-shaped gorge about 100 km from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, formerly Aurangabad. Ellora, about 29 km from the city, has 34 caves open to visitors: Buddhist, Hindu and Jain, including the Kailasa temple, carved from a single rock. The Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga temple is just a couple of kilometres from Ellora.

The guest mix is wide. Indian families and school groups come on holidays, heritage lovers come from Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad, and pilgrims visit Grishneshwar. Foreign travellers come for the art and history, often as part of a longer India trip. Guests usually base themselves in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and add Bibi Ka Maqbara and Daulatabad Fort. The sites keep different weekly offs: Ajanta is closed on Mondays and Ellora on Tuesdays, which trips up many visitors.

Most stays are city hotels in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, from business hotels to heritage-style resorts. A smaller number of resorts, hotels and homestays sit near Ellora and Khuldabad, and a few near Fardapur on the Ajanta side. Many guests only think about the city, so stays closer to the caves have to work harder to be found. Tour operators, OTAs and taxi drivers all play a part in where guests end up sleeping.

The year

When guests come to Ajanta & Ellora

  1. Peak season

    October to February

Pleasant weather, winter holidays and the most foreign guests. Sell two-night plans that cover both sites around their closing days, and fill Diwali and Christmas early.

  2. Monsoon

    July to September

The hills around Ajanta and Ellora turn green and waterfalls run near the caves. Steps get slippery, so market careful, unhurried visits to Mumbai and Pune weekenders.

  3. Summer

    March to June

Very hot, often over 40°C. Demand drops. Market early morning cave visits, pools, air conditioning and good-value rates, and be honest about the heat.

Getting here

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar has an airport with flights from major Indian cities and a railway station with trains from Mumbai and beyond. Ellora is about 29 km from the city, under an hour by road. Ajanta is about 100 km away, roughly two and a half hours, and Jalgaon station is closer to Ajanta at about 60 km. At Ajanta, private vehicles park at Fardapur T-point and guests take a shuttle bus to the caves. Mumbai is about 350 km away.

The hard part

What makes marketing around Ajanta and Ellora hard

The caves draw guests from all over the world, but the trip itself is spread out and easy to get wrong.

  • Different closing days, Mondays at Ajanta and Tuesdays at Ellora, catch many guests out and lead to bad reviews if nobody warns them.
  • Many guests see the city as the only base, so stays near Ellora or Ajanta are often overlooked.
  • Summer heat cuts demand sharply from about March to June.
  • Tour operators and taxi drivers steer where many guests stay, especially foreign travellers.
  • City hotels compete on price on OTAs, which pulls rates down for everyone.

We can't change the closing days, but we can help guests plan around them, and pick you while they do.

Questions

Marketing a stay in Ajanta & Ellora

Something else on your mind? Ask us on WhatsApp.

How do I use the different closing days in my marketing?

Turn them into help. Put a clear note on your site, Google listing and booking confirmation: Ajanta closes on Mondays, Ellora on Tuesdays. Offer a two-day plan that works around them. Guests who get this from you early are grateful, and they often mention it in reviews, which helps the next guest pick you.

My property is near Ellora, not in the city. How do I get found?

Target searches about the caves, not just the city. Make your Google listing accurate, add photos that show how close you are, and create pages on visiting Ellora and Grishneshwar. Guests who want an early start at the caves, or a quieter stay, will find you if you show up for those searches.

Is it worth marketing to foreign travellers directly?

Yes, if you can serve them well. Many plan online and read reviews closely. Clear English pages, quick email and WhatsApp replies, good guide contacts and honest airport transfer prices help a lot. Keep working with tour operators too, but give independent travellers an easy way to book direct.

What can I sell in summer?

Be honest: it's very hot. But early morning cave visits, a pool, good air conditioning and lower rates can still bring families and heritage lovers who have holidays then. Show a plan that finishes at the caves by late morning and brings guests back to rest in the afternoon.
