Guests come from everywhere. Sikh families and pilgrims travel from across India, and NRI visitors from the UK, Canada, the Gulf and elsewhere come home for visits, weddings and gurpurabs. Tourists from Delhi and the rest of north India add Amritsar to a Punjab or Himachal trip, and foreign travellers come for the temple and the border. Stays are short, often two nights, and demand is steady for much of the year rather than seasonal.
Stays range from budget hotels and dharamshalas near the temple to business hotels on the ring roads, heritage havelis, boutique stays and farmstays on the city's edge. In December 2025 the state gave the area around the Golden Temple in the walled city holy city status, and the sale of liquor, meat and tobacco there is now banned. Getting here
Amritsar is easy to reach. Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport has domestic and international flights, which matters for NRI guests. Amritsar Junction is one of the busiest stations in Punjab, with fast trains from Delhi. By road, Delhi is about 455 km and Chandigarh about 220 km. The Attari border is roughly 30 km from the city, usually under an hour by road.
