Who comes to Dalhousie, and why
Dalhousie is an old British hill station in Chamba district, spread over five hills at about 1,970 metres. Guests come for the pine and deodar forests, the colonial churches and Mall roads at Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk, walks to Panchpula, and views of the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal. Most also make the drive to Khajjiar, about 24 km away, with its meadow, small lake and the Khajji Nag temple, and many continue to Kalatop and Dainkund.
The guest mix leans heavily towards road-trippers from Punjab, with Pathankot only about 80 km away, plus families from Delhi NCR, Haryana, Chandigarh and Jammu. Many come for a long weekend or as one stop on a circuit with Dharamshala and Amritsar. Snow is the big draw in winter. When fresh snow falls around Khajjiar, the phones ring, and around New Year hotels in Chamba, Dalhousie and Khajjiar have reported running close to full.
Stays range from old heritage buildings and government hotels to mid-range hotels on the Khajjiar and Banikhet roads, cottages in the forest and a growing number of homestays in villages around Dalhousie and Khajjiar. Under Himachal's Home Stay Rules 2025, homestays must be owner-run, registered and capped at six rooms, which pushes some small places to list under a different category. On the booking sites, many Dalhousie hotels look alike, so price often decides.

Punjab families and friend groups
They drive up from Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Pathankot for two or three nights. They want parking, heaters, hearty food and a room with a view.
Delhi NCR couples
They come on long weekends, often by overnight bus or train to Pathankot. They look for a quiet cottage, forest walks and a bonfire at night.
Snow chasers
They book at short notice when snow is forecast in Khajjiar or Dainkund. They care about road status, chains or 4x4 help and a warm room when they get in.
School groups and older travellers
Dalhousie's schools, churches and gentle walks draw groups and retired couples in spring and autumn. They value easy access, lifts or few stairs, and good vegetarian food.

Getting here
Pathankot is the main gateway, with its railway station and Chakki Bank station about 80 km away, roughly two and a half to three hours by road. Pathankot has a small airport with limited flights, and Kangra airport at Gaggal is another option. Most Punjab guests drive up in a few hours, while Delhi guests usually take an overnight bus or train. Khajjiar is about 24 km from Dalhousie by a forest road that can close after heavy snow.
The hard part
What makes marketing in Dalhousie hard
Demand is real, but it is short, weather-driven and very price-sensitive.
- A lot of demand is weekend-only and comes from drive-in Punjab guests, so weekdays stay slow outside school holidays.
- Snow bookings come at a few days' notice and cancel just as fast when roads to Khajjiar or Dainkund close.
- Many hotels on the booking sites show the same view, the same rooms and similar prices, so guests pick the cheapest.
- Many guests treat Dalhousie as a one-night stop on a Dharamshala or Amritsar circuit.
- Himachal's 2025 homestay rules mean registration, safety equipment and ownership papers must be in order before you market yourself as a homestay.

Lightly, and honestly. July and August bring rain and occasional landslides, so don't push hard. They can. Under the Home Stay Rules 2025, homestays must be run by the owner, registered with the tourism department and capped at six rooms, with safety measures like CCTV and fire extinguishers. Before calling yourself a homestay online, check your registration status. If you're registered, say so. If not, list under the category that fits you.
Should I market Khajjiar or Dalhousie in my listings?
