Pilgrims come for Karni Mata and the Kolayat fair in Kartik. The Rajasthan Tourism camel festival each January brings camel races, folk performances and events at Junagarh and the Raisar dunes, along with a burst of photographers and tour groups.
Stays include palace and heritage hotels, family-run havelis and guesthouses in the old city, mid-range city hotels and desert camps out towards Raisar and the dunes. Competition is thinner than in Jaipur or Jodhpur, but so is demand, and many guests book only one night through an OTA or a tour operator. Jaipur is about 330 km away by road, and Jaipur airport is the nearest large airport. Jodhpur and Jaisalmer are each several hours' drive away. Many circuit travellers arrive by car and driver, so parking and directions matter.
