The Kovalam market
Who comes to Kovalam, and why
Kovalam is about 13 km south of Thiruvananthapuram city, on a coast of three crescent beaches split by rocky headlands: Lighthouse Beach under the Vizhinjam lighthouse, Hawah Beach and Samudra Beach, where fishing boats still come in. Europeans started holidaying here in the 1930s, and the hippie trail made it famous in the 1970s. That history still shapes the market. Kovalam's name is known abroad in a way few Indian beaches are.
Foreign guests, many from Europe, remain a core market, especially for longer winter stays built around ayurveda. Kovalam and the coast around it are full of ayurveda resorts and centres offering treatment packages that run for one to three weeks. Alongside them, Indian families, honeymooners and weekenders from Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Bengaluru and Chennai come for the beach, seafood and a sunset walk to the lighthouse. Business travellers visiting the city and the new port add some midweek demand.
Local reporting has described worn walkways, broken lights and crowded roads, and the state has announced plans to renovate Kovalam and the beaches nearby. Next door, the Vizhinjam International Seaport, India's first deep-water transshipment port, was commissioned in May 2025. It brings investment and new visitors, but also change to the coastline guests know.
Who books
Who stays in Kovalam
Long-stay ayurveda guests
Mostly foreign guests who come for a one to three week treatment package. They research doctors, treatments and food carefully and read reviews in detail.
Winter sun seekers from abroad
European and other overseas travellers escaping winter at home. They want a sea view, walkable beaches, good cafés and a quiet room.
Indian couples and families
Honeymooners and families from across India who add Kovalam to a Kerala trip or a Kanyakumari drive. They want a pool, a beach view and good seafood.
City weekenders and business visitors
Thiruvananthapuram families on a beach weekend, and business travellers visiting the city, Technopark or the Vizhinjam port who prefer a sea-facing room to a city hotel.
The year
When guests come to Kovalam
Peak season
November to March
Dry, sunny and busy with foreign guests, Christmas and New Year crowds and long-stay ayurveda guests. Keep rates firm, reviews fresh and listings sharp in several languages.
Shoulder season
April, May and October
Hot in summer and unsettled in October, with fewer foreign guests. Indian families and weekenders fill some of the gap. Sell pool time, seafood dinners and good-value family rooms.
Monsoon
June to September
Heavy rain and rough seas, and swimming is often unsafe. But in Kerala the monsoon is the traditional season for ayurveda, and some guests come for exactly that. Market monsoon ayurveda honestly and offer strong rates.
Getting here
Kovalam is one of the easiest beaches in India to reach. Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is only about 10 km away, with direct flights from the Gulf and other international hubs as well as major Indian cities. Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station is about 16 km away. Varkala is roughly an hour and a half up the coast, and Kanyakumari is about two to three hours south by road, so many guests combine the three.
The hard part
What makes marketing a stay in Kovalam hard
Kovalam has a famous name and a lot of competition, and not all of its press is good.
- Recent news about neglected beach facilities can put off guests before they arrive.
- Varkala and other beaches now compete for the same foreign and backpacker guests.
- Ayurveda guests are careful and compare treatments, doctors and prices across many centres.
- Foreign demand is seasonal, and the monsoon months can be very quiet.
- Construction and change around Vizhinjam mean guests have questions about what the coast is like now.
You can't fix the promenade yourself, but you can show guests exactly what your stay, your stretch of beach and your service are like today.

Questions
Marketing a stay in Kovalam
Something else on your mind? Ask us on WhatsApp.
Guests worry Kovalam isn't what it used to be. How do I handle that?
Be honest and show them. Post recent photos and short videos of your property, your view and the beach nearby, and keep your Google listing updated. Reply to reviews that mention the beach itself politely and factually. Guests trust what they can see from recent visitors far more than anything you claim.
How do I market an ayurveda resort in Kovalam?
Detail wins. Explain your treatments, how long they take, who your doctors are, what the food is like and what it costs. Many guests are comparing several centres, often from abroad. Clear pages, honest reviews and a quick, knowledgeable reply to enquiries make the difference.
Is the monsoon worth marketing?
For ayurveda, yes. The monsoon is the traditional time for treatments in Kerala and some guests prefer it. For plain beach holidays it's slower, since the sea is rough and swimming is often unsafe. Be clear about that, and offer good rates with ayurveda or relaxation in focus.
Should I focus on foreign or Indian guests?
Both, at different times. Foreign guests are strongest from November to March. Indian families, couples and weekenders from Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Bengaluru and Chennai help fill the rest of the year. Your website and listings should work for both, with the right photos, prices and language.
