Hotel & resort marketing · Sundarbans, West BengalGuests book the boat. Make them book your stay.
Every Sundarbans trip runs on the water. We help eco-resorts and homestays around Gosaba, Pakhiralaya and Bali island get found before the package agent does the deciding.
The Sundarbans market
Who comes to the Sundarbans, and why
The Sundarbans is the largest mangrove delta in the world, and the Indian side is a national park, tiger reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The national park alone covers about 1,330 sq km of tidal islands and creeks in South 24 Parganas. Guests come for the boat trips through the mangroves, the watchtowers at Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali and Dobanki, crocodiles on the mudbanks, birds, village life and the small chance of a tiger on the bank.
Most guests are from Kolkata and the rest of West Bengal. It is a two-night trip for families, office groups, college friends and couples, and many book a package that bundles the boat, meals and a room. School groups and nature clubs come through the winter. Foreign travellers come in smaller numbers, usually on a guided tour from Kolkata, and they read reviews closely before they book.
Stays sit on the inhabited islands at the edge of the forest: Pakhiralaya and Gosaba, Bali island, Jharkhali, Sajnekhali and nearby villages. There are eco-resorts with mud-and-thatch cottages, simple homestays run by village families, a few mid-range resorts and overnight boats. Many properties sell only through package operators, so guests often don't know the name of the place they slept in. That is the problem worth fixing.
Who books
Who stays in the Sundarbans
Kolkata families and friend groups
They come for two nights on a long weekend or during Puja and winter holidays. They want a clean room, good Bengali fish meals, a safe boat and someone who handles the logistics.
Nature and bird lovers
They come for the mangroves, kingfishers, crocodiles and quiet creeks. They care about a knowledgeable guide, early starts and small boats rather than loud group launches.
School and college groups
They come in winter on study tours. They need dormitory-style rooms, simple food, clear safety rules and a host who can handle a big group calmly.
Foreign travellers on a guided trip
They come from Kolkata for one or two nights. They look for English-speaking guides, clear safety information, clean bathrooms and honest reviews.
The year
When guests come to the Sundarbans
Peak season
November to February
Cool, dry and the easiest time on the water. Winter holidays, Christmas and New Year bring the biggest crowds from Kolkata. Sell early and keep weekend rooms for direct bookers.
Shoulder season
March to May, and October
Hot and humid, with cyclone risk in April, May and October. Fewer crowds and lower rates. Market weekday stays, village experiences and flexible rebooking if weather turns.
Monsoon
June to September
Heavy rain, rough rivers and fewer boat trips. Some operators pause altogether. Market the green monsoon to a small group of repeat guests and use the time to fix your photos and website.
Getting here
Kolkata is the gateway. The main boarding point is Godkhali jetty, roughly three to four hours from central Kolkata by road, and from there guests go on by boat. Local trains run from Sealdah to Canning, the nearest railhead, about 29 km from Godkhali. Buses run from Kolkata to Sonakhali, Godkhali and Dhamakhali. Kolkata airport is the nearest airport. Inside the tiger reserve, guests travel only by registered boat with a guide.
The hard part
What makes marketing in the Sundarbans hard
Demand from Kolkata is steady, but the boat and the package usually get booked before the room.
- Package operators sell the boat, food and stay as one price, and many guests never learn which property they'll sleep in.
- Entry into the tiger reserve is only on registered boats with a guide, so your stay depends on good boat partners and clear planning.
- Cyclones and storm warnings can cancel trips at short notice, and the area has been hit hard by storms like Aila, Amphan and Remal.
- Many stays look alike in photos: thatched cottages, a pond and a dining hall. Guests end up choosing on price.
- Tiger sightings are rare, and guests who expected one sometimes blame the trip in their reviews.
We can't promise a tiger or good weather, but we can help guests find you by name and book with you directly.
What we'd do
What we'd do for your Sundarbans stay
Here's how we'd approach an eco-resort or homestay on the edge of the Sundarbans.
A website that explains the whole trip
Clear pages on how to reach Godkhali, the boat route, watchtowers, meals and what a two-night package includes, so guests can book the full trip with you.
Google listing on the right island
A complete Google Business Profile with the right pin on Pakhiralaya, Gosaba or Bali, jetty directions and fresh photos, for searches like "sundarban resort booking".
Weather and safety honesty
A plain page on cyclone season, what happens if a boat trip is cancelled and your rebooking rules. Guests trust stays that say this upfront.
Direct packages for Kolkata groups
Two-night packages priced for families, office groups and college friends, shared on WhatsApp and Facebook groups in Kolkata, with a reason to book direct.
Instagram about the people and food
Posts about your cook, the fish curry, village walks and your boat crew, so your page shows something other resorts can't copy.
Reviews about the stay, not the tiger
Ask every guest to review the food, the rooms and the boat crew, so your rating stays strong on the many trips where no tiger shows up.
Useful on its own
What guests search, and what to post.
The first list is the kind of thing guests type when looking for a stay in the Sundarbans. Your website and Google listing should answer them. The second is a start on your next month of Instagram.

Questions
Marketing a stay in the Sundarbans
Something else on your mind? Ask us on WhatsApp.
How do I get guests to book with me instead of a package operator?
Offer the full trip yourself, or partner with a boat you trust and sell it as one clear package. Put it all on your website with honest pricing, answer WhatsApp quickly and add a small perk for direct bookers, like Canning pickup. Guests who can see exactly what they're getting are happy to book directly.
How should I handle cyclone season in my marketing?
Be upfront. Explain which months carry the most risk, what happens if a storm warning cancels boats and how rebooking works. Keep your Google listing and Instagram updated when trips are paused. Guests from Kolkata know the weather here, and a clear policy makes them more willing to book, not less.
Is Instagram worth it for a small homestay in the Sundarbans?
Yes, if you post real things. Many Kolkata guests look at Instagram before they choose a stay. Show the food, the village, the river at sunrise and the family who runs the place. You don't need fancy photos. You need regular, honest posts that make people feel they know you before they arrive.
Can I attract foreign guests to my property?
You can, but they plan carefully. They want English information, clear safety rules, a trained guide and details on permits, which they should confirm with the forest department before arriving. A simple English page, good reviews on Google and TripAdvisor, and quick replies by email help them choose you over a big tour operator.
