Tawang sits at about 3,000 metres in the far west of Arunachal Pradesh, home to the Monpa people. The big draw is Tawang Monastery, founded in 1680–81 and described by the district as the largest Buddhist monastery in India. Guests also come for Sela Pass and its lake, Sangetsar (Madhuri) Lake, Pankang Teng Tso, Nuranang Falls, the Jaswantgarh and Tawang war memorials, and, with an extra permit, Bum La on the border.
Most guests are Indian: families and groups from Kolkata and the rest of West Bengal, Assam, Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai, plus bikers and road-trippers doing the route through Bomdila and Dirang. Buddhist visitors come for the monastery and its festivals. Foreign guests are fewer, because they need a Protected Area Permit arranged through a registered tour operator. Many trips are packaged Guwahati to Tawang loops sold by agents, and stays are often fixed before the guest ever sees your listing.
Stays are mostly hotels and guesthouses in Tawang town and a growing number of Monpa family homestays in and around it, with more options in Dirang and Bomdila on the way. Rooms fill in spring, autumn and the Puja holidays, and heating, hot water and parking matter more here than a pool ever would. Guests who drive for two days want certainty: a confirmed room, clear directions and a host who answers the phone.

Getting here
Tawang is a long drive. From Guwahati it is about 480 to 550 km via Tezpur, Bhalukpong, Bomdila, Dirang and the Sela tunnel, roughly 14 to 16 hours, so most guests break the trip in Dirang or Bomdila. Tezpur has the nearest airport with regular flights, about 330 km away. A helicopter service runs from Guwahati airport to Tawang in under an hour, weather permitting. Indian guests need an Inner Line Permit, and foreigners a Protected Area Permit.

Tawang has real pull, but distance, permits and weather sit between you and every booking.
- Every Indian guest from outside the state needs an Inner Line Permit, and every foreign guest a Protected Area Permit through a registered tour operator, which puts some people off.
- The drive takes two days from Guwahati, and landslides or snow can delay guests or cancel trips at short notice.
- Agents sell fixed Guwahati to Tawang packages and choose the hotel, so many guests never compare stays themselves.
- Demand bunches around summer holidays and the Pujas, and winter and monsoon months are thin.

Do my guests need permits to visit Tawang?
Yes. Indian guests from outside Arunachal need an Inner Line Permit, which they can apply for online through the state's eILP portal. Foreign guests need a Protected Area Permit, usually arranged through a registered Arunachal tour operator. Bum La needs a separate permit.
