Ujjain is one of the oldest pilgrim cities in India, on the banks of the Kshipra. Since the Shri Mahakal Lok corridor opened in October 2022, the temple area has become a sight in itself, with murals, statues and wide walkways. Guests also visit Kal Bhairav, Harsiddhi, Ram Ghat and Sandipani Ashram.
Guests come from across India, with large numbers from nearby Indore and Bhopal, and from Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Families, older couples and groups travel together, often by car, train or tour bus. Most stay one or two nights. Many pair Ujjain with Omkareshwar, the other jyotirlinga in Madhya Pradesh, about 140 km away. Crowds peak during Shravan, Mahashivratri, long weekends and school holidays.
Stays range from budget lodges and dharamshalas near the temple to mid-range hotels, newer business-style hotels and a growing number of homestays. Demand is very price-sensitive, and OTAs play a big role, because pilgrims often book at short notice. The Simhastha in 2028, held every twelve years on the Kshipra, is already driving new ghats, roads and hotel projects, so competition will only grow.

Getting here
Indore's Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport is the nearest, about 58 km away, roughly an hour and ten minutes by road. Ujjain Junction has trains from across India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Bhopal. Many guests drive from Indore and Bhopal. Omkareshwar is about 140 km from Ujjain, roughly three and a half to four hours by road. Stays should give clear directions to the temple and parking.
