The Kumarakom market

Who comes to Kumarakom, and why

Kumarakom is a group of small islands and villages on the Vembanad, Kerala's largest lake, about 14 km from Kottayam town. The Kerala government declared it a Special Tourism Zone in 2005. Guests come for slow backwater days: a houseboat or shikara on the lake, sunsets from a private jetty, toddy-shop style food, and the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, a small lakeside reserve that fills with herons, darters and migratory birds in winter.

The stays skew upmarket. The lakefront is lined with large resorts, many with cottages on the water, ayurveda centres and event lawns, alongside smaller heritage homes, homestays and houseboats. That makes Kumarakom a favourite for honeymoons, anniversary trips, destination weddings and company offsites. Foreign guests, north Indian circuit travellers and Kochi and Bengaluru families on long weekends make up much of the rest.

Kumarakom is also where Kerala Tourism started its Responsible Tourism work in 2007. The RT Mission runs village life experiences like 'A Day with Farmers', built around coir making, coconut-leaf weaving, fishing and paddy farming, and it links local producers with tourism. For a property, that gives you genuine local experiences to offer guests. The flip side is plenty of competition from nearby Alleppey, which sells the same lake to the same guests.

Who books

Who stays in Kumarakom

  • Honeymoon and anniversary couples

They want a lake-view cottage, a sunset cruise and a private dinner by the water. They compare photos closely and read recent reviews before paying a premium.

  • Wedding and event planners

Destination weddings, family functions and corporate offsites use Kumarakom's lawns and lakefront. Planners need capacity, catering and logistics answered fast.

  • Foreign travellers

European and other overseas guests come in winter for the backwaters, ayurveda and birdwatching. Many book months ahead through agents or online.

  • Kochi, Bengaluru and Chennai families

Long-weekend and holiday families who drive in from Kochi or fly in from Bengaluru and Chennai. They want a pool, kid-friendly food and a half-day houseboat.

The year

When guests come to Kumarakom

  1. Peak season

    November to February

Cool, dry weather, migratory birds at the sanctuary, Christmas and New Year, and the wedding season. Resorts fill with foreign guests and couples. Keep your listings sharp and your rates firm.

  2. Summer

    March to May

Hot and humid, and foreign demand drops. School holidays still bring Indian families. Sell pool time, sunset cruises and value family packages.

  3. Monsoon and Onam

    June to October

The quietest stretch for many resorts, but the lake is lush and ayurveda is in season. Onam brings the Kavanattinkara and Sree Narayana Jayanthi boat races to Kumarakom in August or September. Market monsoon ayurveda and boat-race weekends.

Getting here

Kottayam railway station is about 14 km away, a short taxi ride, and has good trains from across south India. Kochi airport is the nearest, roughly two hours away by road depending on traffic. Many guests combine Kumarakom with Alleppey across the lake, Fort Kochi, Munnar or Thekkady. Some arrive by houseboat or ferry across Vembanad from the Alappuzha side instead of by road.

The hard part

What makes marketing a stay in Kumarakom hard

Kumarakom is a premium market with strong competition, and everyone sells the same lake.

  • Almost every property shows a lake sunset and a hammock, so guests struggle to tell stays apart and fall back on price.
  • Big resorts spend heavily on ads and booking sites, which pushes smaller properties down the results.
  • Alleppey sells houseboats and backwaters to the same guests, often at lower prices.
  • Demand leans hard on winter foreign guests and weddings. The monsoon months can be thin.
  • Houseboat bookings are especially price-driven and dependent on agents.

You can't be the only lake view in Kumarakom, but you can be the one with the clearest story, the best reviews and the easiest way to book.

What we'd do

What we'd do for a property in Kumarakom

Make your stay distinct, win more of the premium guests directly and fill the monsoon.

  1. A Google listing that shows what makes you different

Your actual lakefront, room types, jetty, pool and distance to the bird sanctuary. Many guests pick between Kumarakom stays by scrolling Google Maps photos.

  2. Wedding and events pages

A clear page on capacity, lawns, catering, rooms and a sample event day, so planners can shortlist you without five phone calls.

  3. Local experiences, not just rooms

Package the RT Mission village experiences, a morning birdwatching walk and a sunset shikara ride. It gives guests reasons to choose you and stay longer.

  4. Monsoon ayurveda and Onam offers

Promote ayurveda stays and boat-race weekends to Kerala, Bengaluru and Chennai audiences, from May onwards.

  5. Reviews that talk about service

At this price point, guests read reviews for how staff treated people. Ask every guest, and reply to every review, including the tough ones.

  6. A fast website built for couples

Real photos, room-by-room pricing, honeymoon packages and a WhatsApp button. Couples usually decide together on their phones.

Questions

Marketing a stay in Kumarakom

Something else on your mind? Ask us on WhatsApp.

How can a smaller resort compete with the big names in Kumarakom?

Don't try to outspend them. Show what they can't: a personal host, a homely kitchen, a quieter stretch of lake or local village experiences. Put that front and centre on your website and Google listing, and ask every guest for a detailed review. Many couples prefer a smaller, personal stay if they can see it clearly.

Is it worth marketing weddings and events?

If you have the lawns, rooms and catering, yes. Destination weddings and offsites fill many rooms at once. Planners need fast, clear answers, so a dedicated events page with capacity, photos and sample packages, plus a quick WhatsApp response, helps you get shortlisted.

How do I fill rooms during the monsoon?

Sell what the monsoon is good for. Ayurveda is traditionally taken in the rainy months, the lake is at its greenest and Onam brings the boat races. Promote these to Kerala, Bengaluru and Chennai families from May, with clear prices and flexible dates.

Should I list on booking sites or push direct bookings?

Both. Booking sites bring foreign and first-time guests you might not reach otherwise. But many guests look you up on Google before booking, so a strong website and listing with a direct booking option lets a good share book with you and saves you the commission.
