Thekkady sits in Idukki district, about 4 km from Kumily, the busy plantation town on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. The boat ride on that lake is the famous part, but the forest department's eco-tourism programmes, like bamboo rafting, border hiking and guided nature walks with tribal guides, are what serious visitors remember.
The other half of the story is spice. Cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, clove and coffee grow all around Kumily, and spice plantation tours, spice shops and evening Kathakali and Kalaripayattu shows fill the hours between safaris. Thekkady is a standard stop on the Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey circuit, so many guests come on a driver-led package from other states. Plenty of foreign travellers come too, mostly in the cooler months.
Stays range from large resorts on the Kumily road to plantation bungalows, cottages and a very large number of family-run homestays. Tamil Nadu guests from Madurai, Theni and beyond also drive up on weekends and long holidays. The trouble is that many guests only stay one night. They arrive after lunch, take a boat or a walk, see a show and leave for Alleppey or Munnar the next morning.

Getting here
Everyone arrives by road. The nearest airport is Madurai, about 136 km away, and Kochi airport is about 190 km, usually a four to five hour drive. The nearest railway station is Kottayam, about 114 km away. Kumily sits on the Kottayam to Theni road, so it's a natural link between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Most circuit guests drive in from Munnar or Alleppey, each a few hours of hill driving.
